People who suffer from recurring heartburn may not realize that it is frequently referred to as “acid reflux.” They might hear an ad or see a commercial for information about it and not understand how this might help them cure heartburn.
The term acid reflux is used more frequently by medical professionals when discussing this common problem. Many people suffer from acid reflux from time to time, but others suffer constantly from this condition. Those people who suffer from acid reflux more often should definitely bring this to the attention of their physician.
Sometimes people panic when they suffer from acid reflux because they fear that they are having a heart attack. Acid reflux is a burning sensation or a painful feeling in the center of the chest in the vicinity of the heart.
The pain can be mild and discomforting, or sometimes quite severe until they have sought some kind of treatment to relieve this pain. This is caused by the stomach pumping acid upwards into the back of the throat. The acid escapes the stomach and enters the lower esophagus. Stomach tissue is strong enough to endure these acids, but the throat and esophagus do not have the protective lining to withstand these acids.
Acid Reflux Can Be Treated
Some people suffer the effects of acid reflux only from time to time, and these people can easily find some medications at the local pharmacy to cut down the suffering from the problem. Those people who feel pain often from this problem could have a urgent problem that should be treated by expert medical professionals.
These people will probably be advised to undergo some medical testing to determine the exact nature of the problem. There are specialized tests that can clearly indicate the problem for many people.
Once the doctor has complete information on the state of the esophagus and stomach, the doctor can prescribe treatment to avoid the distressing effects of this condition.
Some people will eliminate this problem by changing their diet. Sometimes acid reflux is caused by very spicy foods or rich creamy foods. Eliminating these from the diet might cure the condition completely.
For some, this is all they have to do to take care of their acid reflux. However, other sufferers will need drugs or medications to keep acids from the stomach from damaging their esophagus further. Additional changes to your sleeping habits may also help relieve damage caused by acids escaping the stomach. The head of the bed should be raised a bit so that acids have a harder time escaping the stomach into the esophagus.
Other people will have a more serious condition which might require some type of surgery for the cure.

Back in 2004 my health was bottoming out and I was feeling lethargic and numb pretty much all the time. I’d had several visits with my doctor, and every time I was told the same thing - you’re fine it must be stress.
Over dinner one evening a herbalist friend of mine suggested I would likely benefit from a detox diet, and take some time to learn how to detox and how my eating habits may be affecting my health. It sounded like a good idea, so I decided to learn all about it, and why so many alternative and complementary health practitioners recommend regular detox dieting and in particular the 7 day detox diet so avidly.
Another thing she suggested to me was to try a detox foot patch. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, if you don’t want to invest in a foot spa, the detox patches can be just as good - although your don’t get the relaxing foot massage at the same time
So here’s my top tips about how to detox your body.
Drink water or herbal teas
Making sure you take in plenty of fluids is very important while you are following a detox diet as it helps to eliminate water-soluble toxins from your body. Drinking plenty of water also has other health benefits like promoting regular bowel movements, helps your internal organs function more efficiently, and improves your complexion. On a normal day try to drink about 2 liters of water, and more when you exercise.
A general pointer is to for every hour that your exercise each day, drink an extra 2 glasses of water. Choose still mineral water, or tap water that has been filtered, or boiled and then cooled. Try to store your water at room temperature rather than in the fridge. If the thought of drinking that much water is overbearing, try herbal teas as well - loose leaf is better than tea bags as it hasn’t been processed as much. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are especially great in a detox as their hidden ingredients help the detox process. Roibosch and green tea has other health benefits too as it is rich in antioxidants.
How Can I Possibly Drink So Much?
Although drinking 8 big glasses of water a day seems hard, here’s a few tips that will help. Have a glass of water with a little freshly squeezed lemon juice or root ginger as soon as you get up - this is great for kick-starting your metabolism and bowel - then aim to drink little and often throughout the day.
Whenever you sit down to eat drink a galss of water first, a glass between meals, have another drink mid evening and perhaps a final glass of water last thing at night. Don’t be afraid to “spice up” the water with a little lemon juice.
The Fresher The Better
If possible you should be buying fresh food and juice or blend them for maximum benefit or just eat them raw, in salads or as snacks or appetizers. When raw, food still has all its enzymes and nutrients intact. If food is kept too long, or when it is cooked or preserved, it loses a lot of its nutritional value.
If at all possible buy from local farms or producers, preferably from farm shops and local markets Food imported internationally tends to be picked underripe (so it won’t have created all the nutrition of a fully ripened plant) and will have lost much of its nutritional value during its journey to your supermarket.
Organic Produce Is Better and Healthier
When detoxing, there’s no need to go completely organic, especially as the cost can be very high, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.
If you can’t buy many organic foods, don’t worry. It’s more important that you eat plentiful amounts of fresh foods, whether they are organic or not, rather than not get enough of them. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of health benefits to going organic on a healthy detox diet.
Organic foods are free from artificial pesticides and sprays, and therefore they are much healthier being free from toxins and man made chemicals. Organic farming is a hotly debated and controversial topic because there is evidence that the ‘cocktail’ effect of man made fertilizers and pesticides may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.
Organic foods undergo minimal processing. Ultimately this means organic foods not genetically modified and are free from hydrogenated fats and artificial additives. On top of that, organic foods usually taste better too.

Does Vinegar have any place in your heartburn food plan? The choice of vinegars for western consumers is varied, but western medics and paramedics suggest that only one of them is suitable for heartburn sufferers. In this article, a qualified nutritionist tells you about the vinegars that are on no account to be used by heartburn patients, and another kind of vinegar that is not only a great addition to your diet, but that actually works to dramatically improve your medical state.
We can define heartburn as the sensation of burning in the area of the throat or the chest, often with a bitter or sour taste. Although this can happen to people who are quite healthy (but not more than once a week), chronic heartburn is taken to be a symptom of a disease known as acid reflux, or gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Other than heartburn, severe cases of GERD may also display symptoms of problems in swallowing, loss of weight, hoarseness and asthma. If neglected, GERD can then degenerate into a more severe condition called Barrett’s esophagus with the risk of cancer of the esophagus as well.
In a healthy organism, a circular muscle lets food and drink flow one way into the stomach, but closes to prevent any flow back in the opposite way. It is when this muscle is weakened due to certain factors discussed further on, that stomach juices can get back into the esophagus (this is the definition of acid reflux), damaging the interior and provoking heartburn. In medical terms, this circular muscle is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and the ailment is gastro esophageal reflux disease. The LES is the valve or circle of muscle closing off the esophagus from the stomach.
Factors responsible for GERD may be direct agents causing the condition, others worsening a condition that already exists. There are both principal and secondary factors that contribute to GERD, and there are also complex interconnections between them. These causative elements include:
1. Undue production of gastric acid. In many instances (often because of inherited characteristics), the human organism may over-fabricate stomach acid that then overflows back into the esophagus to corrode lining cells.
2. Excessive multiplication of Candida. In certain instances, Candida can demonstrate far too much growth, swamping out the immune system and generating over 79 varied toxins that can cause the body impairments in various ways, GERD being one of them. Candida is the mono-cellular fungus found in any case in the human body (mainly in the areas of the genitals and the intestinal apparatus) in amounts that are symbiotically controlled by the rest of the body’s natural internal flora.
It is a proven fact, in addition to the above, that a number of foods make the situation worse and stimulate Candida overgrowth. Together with white flour and sugar (and other refined carbohydrates of this type), these dangerous foods include most kinds of vinegar, including balsamic, wine, white and malt vinegar. The reason is that all these vinegars are acid-forming when consumed, thus pushing up the degree of acidity of the intestines and the blood. This then provokes acid reflux and worsens its level of severity.
However, organic apple cider vinegar is the exception. Not only can it alkalize your intestinal tract (it is the only vinegar to do this), but it can also considerably reduce inflammation of the esophagus and keep Candida down to the proper levels.
As an important remark, heartburn does not however lend itself to instantaneous solutions because it is triggered by a combination of many underlying causes. The only reliable way to inverse the tendency and prevent heartburn from recurring is to treat the inner environment that is responsible in the first place for acid reflux happening.
A full, all-natural, holistic program is the only solution for that.

For many sufferers there is a strong connection between acid reflux disease and diet, and not just what they are eating but how much in any one sitting. The reason for this is because some foods are much more difficult for the body to break down and digest and this causes the stomach to churn out more acid when presented with these types of foods, and because some foods already have a high acid content. The common consensus being that a high acid content diet added to the acids already in your stomach is simply too much for you to cope with.
The good news about this connection between acid reflux disease and diet is that this means that you may be able to make certain changes in your life and your dietary habits in order to control your acid reflux and perhaps even cure it for good. For example, cutting down on your red meat intake should help as this is one of the hardest foods your stomach has to break down.
High acid foods to avoid include most of the citrus foods such as lemons, limes and oranges as well as tomatoes. Cutting down on these should help your acid reflux.
One connection between acid reflux disease and diet that many people don’t consider is not just what type of food is in your diet but how much of it you eat. When you eat a lot and overfill your stomach, more acid is produced to try and cope and then because the stomach is so full, the acid overflows and escapes back trough the esophagus.
Limiting yourself to smaller portions may well help your acid reflux disease. You don’t need to cut down and make yourself go hungry, just have smaller meals and a snack or two in between. If you are overweight however you should try and cut down as this has also been shown to contribute to acid reflux.
For some, there may not actually be a connection between acid reflux disease and diet. They can either have a genetic defect in the area of the stomach or are just more prone to acid buildup. You can find a lot more info on acid reflux disease and diet by clicking here.

Are there any foods you can eat that will alleviate symptoms of acid reflux? In keeping with many sufferers of acid reflux, you may ask yourself if specific nutrition which avoids foods that degenerate an acid reflux condition can allow you to vanquish your medical condition.
We’ll take a quick look at the fundamental physiological causes behind acid reflux and then go on to discuss food plans that can help with acid reflux symptoms.
The LES or lower esophageal sphincter is a valve-like muscle located at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach. When food travels from the esophagus into the stomach, the LES is momentarily relaxed to let the food pass through. After the entry of the food in the stomach, the LES closes again, to keep the acids and juices inside the stomach. If the LES does not shut correctly (because of different external or internal problems), stomach acid is thrown back up into the esophagus, corroding and inflaming its lining, which generates the disagreeable, painful feeling of burning which is also called heartburn.
Doctors tell us that, above all, in patients over 60, one of the causes of esophageal cancer is in fact gastro esophageal reflux disease. Ignoring or postponing treatment of a GERD problem can mean that scar tissue, generated after corrosion and inflammation, can narrow the esophagus. Afterwards, bleeding or ulcers of the esophagus can happen.
Combining nutrition recommendations with additional diet guidelines can have a positive influence on your acid reflux symptoms and on your general well being and health. Doctors and paraprofessionals together have the belief that certain alterations in lifestyle, comprising the addition of certain foods to one’s dietary plan and the abolition of others, can bring benefits to GERD victims:
1. Intake of high-fiber foods (vegetables, whole grains, fruits, among others) can benefit your digestion, halt ulcers and remove toxins to reduce your susceptibility to gastro esophageal reflux disease.
2. Fish and fish oil containing the powerful anti-inflammatory agents in their omega-3 fatty acids that can therefore beneficially treat acid reflux.
3. Eating snacks and smaller meals more frequently to improve the way that the digestive system works, as larger meals are more difficult to digest.
4. Eliminating fatty and high calorie foods that take longer to digest and which are not easily eliminated from your body, therefore increasing the risk that acid will be thrown back up into your esophagus. Less of these foods reduces intestinal cell lining inflammation.
5. Limiting your intake of coffee, chocolate, alcohol and tomatoes that act to weaken the sphincter of the esophagus and therefore provoke the phenomenon of acid reflux.
The only permanent solution for healing and halting gastro esophageal reflux disease recurrence is to resolve all factors whether internal or external that contribute to acid reflux by using a holistic strategy. The afore-mentioned dietary principles and others can bring important benefits to sufferers of GERD if followed the right way, yet they are only a lesser part of the overall all-natural method that targets the basic causes of gastro esophageal reflux disease.
Were you aware that your burdensome, distressing condition of acid reflux could be eradicated forever by following an overall holistic program? Following a holistic strategy together with a food plan for the right nutrition for acid reflux will allow you to stop symptoms of acid reflux and prevent its return forever.
