Acid Reflux Surgery

POST BY : Ady |

Almost all patients suffering from acid reflux are given prescriptions from their doctors for medications as a first option but if these prescribed drugs fail the patient may have no choice but to undergo acid reflux surgery.  First off, keep in mind that your doctor will only perform acid reflux surgery without you first having made those necessary changes to your lifestyle and diet.

This is because if you are causing your own acid reflux due to eating poorly or drinking heavily at the weekend, the condition is just going to return after the acid reflux surgery.

Also, you will be pleased to hear that most people report good success with the medications and prescriptions, so their continued use may well mean there will be no need for acid reflux surgery.  If you have been prescribed drugs by your doctor for acid reflux it is very important that you keep to the instructions and make sure you are taking your meds properly. Take the treatment for at least two months to give it a chance to work before considering the acid reflux surgery.

If you do opt for acid reflux surgery, the usual procedure is known as a fundoplication.  This creates a valve in the form of a flap at the entrance of the stomach which inflates a bit as you eat and the stomach fills up; the valve is naturally tighter when the stomach is full.

Many patients report being very satisfied with the results of this type of surgery. There have also been many improvements made to this type of acid reflux surgery over the years and if you are considering acid reflux surgery, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you have and go through your options with them.
