Acid Reflux Disease And Diet

POST BY : Ady |

For many sufferers there is a strong connection between acid reflux disease and diet, and not just what they are eating but how much in any one sitting. The reason for this is because some foods are much more difficult for the body to break down and digest and this causes the stomach to churn out more acid when presented with these types of foods, and because some foods already have a high acid content. The common consensus being that a high acid content diet added to the acids already in your stomach is simply too much for you to cope with.

The good news about this connection between acid reflux disease and diet is that this means that you may be able to make certain changes in your life and your dietary habits in order to control your acid reflux and perhaps even cure it for good. For example, cutting down on your red meat intake should help as this is one of the hardest foods your stomach has to break down.

High acid foods to avoid include most of the citrus foods such as lemons, limes and oranges as well as tomatoes. Cutting down on these should help your acid reflux.

One connection between acid reflux disease and diet that many people don’t consider is not just what type of food is in your diet but how much of it you eat. When you eat a lot and overfill your stomach, more acid is produced to try and cope and then because the stomach is so full, the acid overflows and escapes back trough the esophagus.

Limiting yourself to smaller portions may well help your acid reflux disease. You don’t need to cut down and make yourself go hungry, just have smaller meals and a snack or two in between. If you are overweight however you should try and cut down as this has also been shown to contribute to acid reflux.

For some, there may not actually be a connection between acid reflux disease and diet. They can either have a genetic defect in the area of the stomach or are just more prone to acid buildup. You can find a lot more info on acid reflux disease and diet by clicking here.
