Following an acid reflux diet is going to involve two things - eating more of the foods that are good for you, and avoiding the foods that cause acid flare-ups. Both of these steps are going to be difficult, there's no doubt about that, but they are both important when it comes to not just controlling acid production in the stomach but for overall health as well. Most of the foods that you avoid when following an acid reflux diet are difficult on your system to begin with, and many of the foods that you're encouraged to eat on this diet are very healthy for you anyway.
Foods to avoid on your acid reflux diet are those that are high in acids themselves, and this includes red meat, processed or canned meats (hot dogs, tuna), and acidic fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, berries, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, cranberries, strawberries, garlic, onions, leeks, and beverages such as coffee, tea, colas, and usually wine along with hard liquors. Desserts that are high in oils such as cakes, cookies, and brownies are also typically avoided. Fried foods and fast foods are also to be avoided. Foods that you want to eat on your acid reflux diet are those that are less difficult for your body to digest, including oats, grains, lean proteins such as turkey, chicken, and fish, and leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, chards, and items such as these.
Of course, the best acid reflux diet is going to be one that takes into account your own particular system and sensitivities. If you notice that certain foods cause your acid reflux to flare up, you need to avoid that. If there are foods you eat that don't seem to bother you, then there's no reason to avoid them. However, you also want to be aware of your meal portions when following an acid reflux diet. When you overload your stomach with food, even the best of foods, you're going to force it to produce more stomach acid and as a result, this acid will spill over from your stomach and back up into your esophagus. Keeping track of what you eat and how much is important when following an acid reflux diet. Get used to eating smaller meals, and if you're still hungry, simply have a light snack in between these meals. It's also important to avoid eating for two to three hours before bedtime, as your acid reflux will probably flare up when you're trying to sleep if your stomach is still full of food.
